THE FRIENDS OF STAFFORD CASTLE
Visit to Chirk Castle, near Wrexham, on Saturday 4th October 2008

Chirk Castle is a magnificent medieval fortress of the Welsh Marches. Completed in 1310, it is the last Welsh castle from the reign of Edward I still lived in today. Features from its 700 years include the medieval tower and dungeon, a 17th century Long Gallery and grand 18th century state apartments with elaborate plasterwork, Adam-style furniture, tapestries and portraits. In the award-winning gardens are clipped yews, herbaceous borders and a stunning shrub garden, with many rare varieties. A terrace with magnificent views looks out over the Cheshire and Salop plains. The 18th century parkland contains many mature trees and provides the opportunity for a one and a quarter mile circular walk. A Tea Room (for morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon tea), Farm Shop and Gift Shop are located in the Visitor Reception area. There is a licensed restaurant in the castle courtyard. From the Visitor Centre there is a short steep uphill walk to the castle and garden.

The coach will depart from Stafford (opposite the railway station) at 9 a.m.
It is suggested that you spend the morning walking round the gardens, and tour the house (which opens at 12 noon) after lunch.
House, Shops and Tea Room close at 4 p.m. The coach will leave Chirk at 4.15 p.m.
Chirk is a National Trust property, so members gain free admission on production of a current card.
The cost of entry for non-members of the National Trust is £8.
This promises to be a very interesting day, and we hope as many as possible will join us. Non-members of the Friends of Stafford Castle are very welcome.

The coach fare will be £10 per person.

Please complete the slip below and forward to Anne Hutchinson, 63 Deanshill Close, Stafford ST16 1BW (Tel: 01785-253670).

I wish to reserve ............. places on the coach trip to Chirk Castle on 4th October, and enclose a cheque for £10 per person made payable to “Friends of Stafford Castle”.
